IBIZA NEWS ARCHIVE
AMNESIA, BORA BORA, DC10 SHUT, IBIZA IN TATTERS
To first briefly recap a few of last weekends' news headers:
Remarkably the authorities (apparently the police, presumably encouraged by the newly elected Socialist party) appear to be going to war on the islands' major nightclubs, Ibiza 's overwhelmingly most important industry, the cog around while all island life revolves.
That's correct; the main attraction of a tiny tourist island that relies entirely upon holidaying visitors is under attack, or in some cases, actual vicious ball-breaking onslaught. AMNESIA have been ordered closed for the month of JUNE , while BORA BORA beach bar in PLAYA D'EN BOSSA and DC10 on the SALINAS road have each been hit by TWO MONTH bans carrying them quietly through to AUGUST . All other suggestions of further closures are of course just typical island gossip!
THINGS, CAN ONLY GET BETTER? - D:REAM ON . after the shock closures of AMNESIA, BORA BORA and DC10 , there are also fears circulating that the other Playa D'en Bossa venues - SPACE and DIVA - might well get the same short shrift. It possibly hasn't helped their cause that SPACE were famously set up to hold the election night 'victory' celebration fiesta for the party that actually lost control. Oops! But of course this is a legal matter, not politics.
If the authorities / police REALLY want to decimate the tourist industry for this (and possibly next) season, then closing SPACE would really be the attention-grabbing calamity that would ensure a GLOBAL-QUAKE of negative exposure. It is, after all, regular winner of every prestigious BEST CLUB IN THE WORLD award going, including the current PACHA IBIZA DJ AWARDS , if memory serves me right (or is that PACHA again?) So, would they dare?
By Friday afternoon of the 15 th of June AMNESIA failed to have the closure order overturned, and thus their own Saturday opening party was abandoned. At 8pm that day rival PRIVILEGE sent out a release announcing that SVEN VATH'S 'FREAKSHOW' COCOON PARTY - an AMNESIA night, was to launch at their venue instead, and continue to do so for the next three weeks from 18 th of June. Earlier that same day CREAM'S website issued the following statement
CREAM IBIZA - POSSIBLE CHANGE OF VENUE FOR OPENING PARTY : " It has been announced that Amnesia will be closed during the month of June. It is unlikely, but yet not confirmed, that Cream's scheduled opening party on Thursday 21st June will not be held within Amnesia. But we can confirm that we already have an alternative venue on hold if Amnesia fails to win a reprieve. Further details will be announced, but once again we can reassure you that there will be a Cream Opening Party on Thursday 21st June in Ibiza ."
It's been rumoured that, rather than PRIVILEGE, CREAM could opt for one of the SAN ANTONIO CLUBS - either EDEN or ES PARADIS - to hold their first two parties, but that appears to have subsided after negotiations, which is a pity if true in the case of ES PARADIS because it would be great to see the old darling REALLY rammed to the rafters like the golden olden daze once again. Still, anything can happen, CREAM at SPACE anyone? That's my guess, and now everyone is saying it's a done deal, except CREAM who, in a text, to the last minute advise me 'DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE' . Well, we'll soon see.
A problem at ES PARA would be the sound system, or rather, acoustics, not being quite suited to the likes of PAUL VAN DYK'S sounds, which, for an event all about the quality of its DJ's and music is important. Certainly the spine-crushing new MARTIN AUDIO sound system at EDEN (same as used at FABRIC in London ) would better suit the likes of him and EDDIE HALLIWELL .
Incidentally, it's rumoured that MAURO PICOTTO'S MEGANITE was wooed by AMNESIA over winter, but the Italian star declined to return to the venue where he first made his IBIZA name playing for GODS KITCHEN, CREAM and others. Bet he's glad he stayed put, in light of current events.
At MANUMISSION'S eve-of-opening presentation of the stage show to the local great and good, media, holiday company representatives (and me, who they seem to just about tolerate), ANDY McKAY went on stage at the outset to announce that this was their longest ever season, and that, if even one of their shows were forced to be lost through any kind of ban at PRIVILEGE the whole thing would come tumbling down. Or words and sentiments to similar effect.
The next night, Friday 15 th of June, saw the event open to the usual masses. The theme for this summer is a CINE-MANUMISSION FILM STUDIO type thing. The stage set is certainly their grandest yet, a huge structure of cages, doorways and platforms that vaguely makes reference to film set pieces. There's also been major effort put into restyling the COCO LOCO area as SLEAZEVILLE and the MUSIC BOX back room, not least with a GIANT PUSSY CAT statue, which MIKE McKAY told me had caused him to have to borrow from the bank to be able to afford (thousands might not believe that claim, but I was certainly all ears). It's certainly a fabulously conceived production, with a cast of dozens. The overall film theme revolves around a revolutionary Flamenco freedom fighter played - or rather strummed, since he talks through his guitar - by PACO FERNANDEZ . He battles it out with ROGER TAYLOR of DURAN DURAN fame, who appears to fight back with an electric guitar. Meanwhile the main room music and show pieces have been programmed by eclectic DJ TOM MIDDLETON , joining MANU regular GRIFF in the DJ BOOTH that sits on a bridge other the clubs swimming pool.
OLLIE LANG of BORA BORA was at PLASTIK on Thursday because he was 'bored' of having little to do. Since BORA BORA was shut down last Monday he's been DJing three hours a day at the new, stylish clubby bar next door "to four or five people and a dog." He said.
Reports that the local PLAYA D'EN BOSSA shops, bars, restaurants and the rest are teetering on the edge, following a punter exodus, are as yet unconfirmed, but for sure, if SPACE went too the most frequent visitors to the area are likely to be balls of tumbleweed.
On the other hand, I checked over BORA BORA environs on way to WE LOVE opening party at SPACE on Sunday and - well, yes, the modern bar adjacent to BORA BORA (on the south / SPACE side) was indeed attended by six people (a dog left, a person arrived), however the actual BORA BORA restaurant was full, and the BB bar busy. There were a fair amount of pining, jiggling clubby types dotted around the sunbeds on the sand out front, and pounding music blaring. from TAHITI - the bar next door. A number of the wasted set were already dancing about on the big open (dance?) area in front of the bar, and looking as if they were just the advance brigade of a probable mong-tastic invasion. It may take a bit of time to develop, but remember, a couple of years before BORA BORA took off in the late 90's it was actually the Italian boys of ZENITH that kicked everything off in that very beach area with a mad party season at. yup, you got it, TAHITI . So is TAHITI destined to reclaim its crown and become the new BORA BORA , that itself was the new TAHITI , over June and July? I'm sure a dozen bright sparks have already registered the website name and are compiling CD compilations under the name as I write.
Will the BORA BORA re-opening party become a SOUND CLASH as both it and TAHITI go head to head? Hmmm, doubtful, they're owned by the same people I understand.
The AMNESIA situation supposedly related to the CLOSING PARTY of a couple of seasons ago, when they were ordered to adhere to the stipulated new closing hours and shut up shop at 6am . They did so, but moved everyone out very very slowly towards the car parks, then - legally - opened again at 8am and carried on all day. The then new Chief of Police was less than impressed, and in many peoples eyes this current impasse is a direct result of that incident in particular, and a few dozen others that have niggled with both police and the local residents. That said, do the police not take any notice of ruling politicians?
For sure there aren't too many club industry bosses who'd be ticking a Socialist Party box if a snap election was held tomorrow. But then again it's doubtful if any did last month anyway. And fortunately for the political party there isn't a requirement to face a public vote for four more years, by which time they'll doubtless anticipate that this current policy of low tolerance will have borne positive fruit and that the area, or island, will have been RETURNED TO GOAT HERDING .
Or alternatively with Ibiza become an exclusive haven only for multimillionaire SAN TROPEZ-TYPE YACHT OWNERS? (Yup, those tight little Playa D'en Bossa holiday apartments that the dance massive cram into at present are going to be overrun by the young 18 year old LADY VICOUNT and LORD MUCKIE types whose whole lazy no-need-to-work lifestyle is one of champagne and partying - so they won't want any clubs or nightlife, will they. But if the HIGH SOCIETY types neglect to slum it in order to stay in Playa D'en Bossa, as the big bad business people and evil working class clubbing tourists are finally driven out, where will all the new inland areas be found to house a BUILDING BOOM in POSH LUXURY VILLAS AND SWIMMING POOLS? Will every hillside, hilltop and wooded valley be given over to urbanisation? (Err, has someone actually thought this whole thing through?) Perhaps the local government will somehow locate funds to expand the island out into the sea, in the manner of DUBAI 'S 'THE PALM ' or 'THE WORLD' developments?
FALIRAKI and AYIA NAPA are perhaps looking less like the joke alternative clubbing options that they once appeared! Indeed, I've always said, RHODES as an island (where FALIRAKI is located) has the potential to evolve into the sort of semi-innocent CLUBBING MECCA that Ibiza was in the mid-80's. It has a beautiful fortress old town in the capital (with stylish bars and top restaurants and shopping inside and out), a trashy WEST END equivalent ( FALIRAKI ) but on a far larger scale, complete with big club venues, fabulous hotels and miles of wide sandy beaches. Then there's a spectacularly set little ancient town (the Crusaders used as their staging point) that's every bit as exotic and action-packed at the Ibiza Town port area ( LINDOS ). Add to that the best seafood restaurants you can imagine, plus a long-established High Society and HOLLYWOOD celebrity scene and. well, look out Ibiza Town . and build a branch of PACHA there now! (or have they already?)
Reports that NEWQUAY in CORNWALL has also been enjoying a sudden surge in bookings all week are also, as yet, unconfirmed, but I've got to say, that spectacular north Cornwall coastline, with its vast sandy beaches, amazing rocky coves, the world-class surfing, plus the New-Med UK climate, are likely to become ever-more appealing to the 53% of all Ibiza tourists who annually arrive from the British Isles. Even Newquay discotheques with names like 'THE REEF', 'THE JOLLY PIRATE', 'SMUGGLERS COVE', 'THE BENT BUCKLE' and 'CREST-RIDER' are beginning to grow on me in the way that AMNESIA, KU, SPACE and ES PARADIS once did. Will they become a serious alternative for a good boogie night out? Will TIESTO be appearing weekly at 'TOOTHLESS JOE BUCCANEER'S' soon?
Aye, and a pasty and a pint too!
Meanwhile, back in IBIZA .
DIVA - the newly named venue in PLAYA D'EN BOSSA that used to be called either LOVE, SOMNY or KISS over the past four seasons, launched on Saturday 9 th of June. It's now owned by the ambitious EDEN - KANYA - COASTLINE people, plus others co-owners such as WILLIE of BAR M. GILES SAWNEY of the KASBAH sunset bar-restaurant is also heavily involved on the promotion side, so it's a powerful San Antonio grouping. They've got the whole venue, both the original KISS and the half that became SOMNY awhile back, so it's a huge space, complete with large open air roof terrace. ISAAC HIDALGO , the manager of EDEN , explained that they only took control of the venue little over a month before opening, but has invested heavily in the premises already. However, he says that next season will see a big change. Given that the evolvement of EDEN from KAOOS took place in similar fast-action-fast-refurbishment circumstances in 1999, then was demolished and rebuilt by the summer of 2000, followed by the similar acquisition of KANYA three years ago, again followed by total demolition and rebuild, then there's little doubting their claimed intentions. "The really big changes will come next year, including an even larger roof terrace over the whole building. For now we are content for it to work as an underground location, let really good parties find their feet and evolve, particularly as a place for the local Spanish community."
The nightly series of ALL NIGHT parties at KANYA , from midnight through until 6am , has begun in earnest. Monday saw FERGIE go off on his EXCENTRIC ARTISTS event, which already exists in LONDON , BIRMINGHAM , SCOTLAND and NORTHERN IRELAND . It was a reasonable launch, good party atmosphere, enough people. And it was preceded by the sunset KEYMIX happening from 9pm until midnight - a party run by his PARENTS .
JASON BYE - resident DJ for WE LOVE at SPACE , and at CAFE MAMBO on Friday and Saturday nights, delivered a world first - the debut public gig of his rock band - DOGROK . The gig took place at the newly named and restyled OPIUM ROOM (formerly YATES' and CHEERS ) n the WEST END of SAN ANTONIO . Jason played guitar and sang the songs he himself wrote, accompanied by two other axe-wielding blokes and a drummer. It was very retro-tastic sounding, much in the style of many POST-PUNK NEW WAVE outfits at the end of the 1970's. Though by no means a sell-out (even in a free bar) the low-key launch was all that Jason wanted, overcoming any nerves he delivered solidly and rocked the gathering of club promoters and DJ stars.
DOES MY BUM LOOK BIG IN THIS? I'm not complaining. believe me, I'm not complaining, but I can't help observing the obsession for girls to stick their BUM out at camera at every opportunity this summer. Of course, it may have a lot to do with them wearing various forms of tight promotional 'hot' pants emblazoned with a slogan relating to TIDY. TWICE AS NICE , or various other club nights, but well, I just - as I said already - observed that it's almost like an epidemic of BUM thrusting at the moment. and I'm not complaining. Definitely not - and good to see that so many girls have got over suffering unnecessary anxiety about the size of their ARSES .
Speaking of TWICE AS NICE , they've switched their Thursday night party from ES PARADIS to EDEN this year - their TENTH season on the island (and their 13 th year as an ever-evolving URBAN PARTY concept). The 28 th of June event is going to be their BIG BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION BASH .
I asked STEVE GORDON - the TWICE AS NICE boss - about the move, after so many seasons in a glamorous looking venue that well-suited the TWICE AS NICE sense of style: "I love ES PARA with all my heart, a beautiful venue, but you need to freshen everything up from time to time." The opening party at EDEN last Thursday had HARVY , of SO SOLID fame, performing live and, as usual, gaggles of laydeeeze dominating the crowd. It's always been a magnet for.
Strangely another 'URBAN' promotion - LOVEDOUGH - moved into the spot vacated by TWICE at ES PARADIS , in direct competition (rather than go for a different night so as not to split the crowd). The fact that the doors of the two venues face each other five metres apart was convenient for the many who fancied moving between the two events ( LOVEDOUGH opened as a basically free affair, with a glass of CHAMPAGNE at the entrance too). The Leeds-Newcastle party went for a harder grime and darker urban edge overall, to face up against their R&B-centric EDEN rival. They also had the world champion human beat box FAITH SFX and other live acts. The posters suggested TIM WESTWOOD was also appearing (well, it said so in big letters) but no one spotted him, so that was a little odd, and a detail well pointed out by the EDEN team across the street. Overall a decent night, though in the end the post -4am crowd tended to drift more heavily towards EDEN , lured by the presence of those laaaydeeeeze no doubt. It's a pity the two parties have had to clash, because both have potentially large followings. A bemused STEVE GORDON , outside the two doors, watching developments, said: "I really don't know why other promotions seem to feel they have to destroy ours in order for them to work on this island. There's room for more than one successful urban night in Ibiza ".
FAITH SFX appeared in SOUL CITY in the WEST END of SAN AN the previous Wednesday night, partly as promotion for LOVEDOUGH , and 'for the first time in five years' as regular staff noted, caused the whole room to stop and star in awe at his solo performance.
PUKKA UP , who switched their Friday party at ES PARADIS over to MONDAYS this season, have also revamped the old VIP BALCONY BAR at the club in order to inject a bit of additional glamour to this most unique of venues. Ibiza organiser GEMMA CHARTERS told me "It's the most beautiful venue, one that really suits our image and what we're about, so we decided to bring back a long-dormant area of the main room and go for a bit of wow factor. The DJ level has moved up a level this year, with some fancy-Dan headliners and a number of live performers. Two of the parties are MTV specials, filmed for broadcast on the MTV DANCE channel chart show.
Was at the new MATCH BAR IBIZA on Friday night - the new port front bar, with a huge, lush terrace - part of the LONDON MATCH BAR / SOSHO group (it was formerly K-UBE , the place then owned by Café Mambo / Savannah ). I found various celebrity club types like the new editor of MIXMAG - the UK 's leading monthly club scene magazine, plus various UK scene fashion photographers and stylists, in fact the ELLE magazine IN STYLE stylist, or Ed, or something similar. All I know is, everywhere I looked I was surrounded by similarly connected types, which has to bode well for the new enterprise in its longer-term ambition to be THE first point of call on the Ibiza Town port front in years to come. The owners were there too, though the strange thing was, since it was 1.30am and MANUMISSION'S opening party was going on at PRIVILEGE , and ANDY MANU did a meet and greet as he passed by, no one there was planning to go and check the islands' biggest night out.
KIRK FIELD has brought his annual IBIZAN HEAT clubbers holiday trip over to the island - with 550 MAINLY AUSTRALASIAN and SOUTH AFRICAN London-based clubbers - for 10 days of mad partying. Two Scots girls who are on the trip were sitting by the pool at KANYA (the trips' daily base) and were devastated to discover that both DC10 / CIRCO LOCO and BORA BORA were closed. ALISON and MANDY said the sole reason they made the trip was to spend a lot of time at both. One of them, initially planning to extend her stay for a second week, immediately decided not to. Another lost customer!
ANYWAY . back to KIRK . He's playing in MANMISSION'S toilets next week with the boss of HEAT - DAMIEN - the guy behind SW4 FESTIVAL on CLAPHAM COMMON ). The duo is playing as THE CUBICAL BROTHERS. He's got things like BBC RADIO covering it, other TV wanting to fly over and cover them playing, articles left right and centre in the UK press. all for a joke gig!
Meanwhile the DIRTY ROTTEN DJ's , local IBIZA HEROES who carry the San An worker massive with them whenever they play, have just departed the MANU TOILET gig after SIX SOLID YEARS playing amongst the female piss and perfume. and never got any attention from the UK media! FUNNY OLD WORLD. When I pointed this out to Kirk he said 'ahh, but they didn't have a great name like the CUBICAL BROTHERS' . Yep, so much more interesting than the name and enduring reputation for mayhem that the DIRTY ROTTEN DJ's have built on the island over the past six years.
Meanwhile the DIRTY ROTTEN DJ's un-interesting-sounding DIRTY ROTTEN SLUT party. full of slutty worker girls acting like, sluts, and filth and sexual monsters. which has been held at a SEX SWINGERS club venue in Port D'es Torrent since early May, is moving to a fresh location in the Bay. Though on good terms the BEVERLY 'S management were becoming concerned that some over exuberance might cause damage to their exotic toys, for example the SINGAPORE SLING . For the summer at least, the venue wishes to return to a lower profile existence.
WEST END of San Antonio clubbing-bar HUSH has been having it right off since the word go this season. Open until 6am it's raving most nights and rammed from 4am to 6am virtually always, with nights involving MISS DIVINE (LA LITA) - Thursday night Friday morning) and MARCO LOCO with DA SENDRI particularly going off, as has the Sunday night / Monday morning with JON CONSTANTINE and DANNY GRAHAM.
I received a text message that seemed to be about EIGHT YEARS OLD the other day. I checked to make sure it was indeed a new one and not something that had been bouncing around the stratosphere since 1999, trying to locate my receiver. It read ' BLOCKO , IN MAMBO, TOTALLY HAMMERED. PHOTOS? ' I was at nearby KANYA at the time (4pm in the afternoon) but declined to rush over, not wishing to relive the kind of experience that was almost a daily occurrence back in the day. it just didn't seem a humane thing to do.
CELEB CORNER . JONATHAN WOODGATE and STUART DOWNING - the ENGLAND and MIDDLESBORO footballers - turned up at a few parties last week. Stuart, who's a part-time DJ enthusiast, spun a few discs on the PUKKA UP BOAT PARTY on Monday, then did so again at KANYA BEACH CLUB the following afternoon (unfortunately it rained and was grey, which ruined the spectacle somewhat, no one was by the pool). This was followed by an appointment at EDEN , for GATECRASHER , where he performed with the IBIZA RESIDENTS people in the FUNKY ROOM , with 'WOODY' (which I presume 'Jono's nickname to be, because footballers nicknames tend to be obvious - although I understand REAL MADRID fans refer to him as the Spanish equivalent of 'SICK NOTE' ) lending moral support.
CELEB CORNER TWO. KATE MIDDLETON - posh girl who dated PRINCE WILLIAM and was supposed to be destined to become the next QUEEN of ENGLAND is in Ibiza, at a villa in CALA JONDAL , hanging out at the BLUE MARLIN and such like. which, quite honesty, is about as fascinating to me as reading that AUNTY MABEL and UNCLE ARTHUR are hanging out at PLAYA D'EN BOSSA and drinking at JOSE'S SNACK BAR . On the other hand, I've never watched BIG BROTHER either, and probably there are many in the world who find gossip about DJ's and NIGHTCLUBS equally tedious, so, touche.
WIRED is the name of a new service just launched on the island whereby you can sign up for around two pounds (UK Sterling) per day and receive continual updates on your mobile phone about what's going on today, this evening, in an hour, right now etc in clubs and on beaches etc. With Celeb-spotting a big part of it. KATE MOSS in PACHA . you got it. P DIDDY in PACHA , err, you got it. JADE JAGGER in, um, PACHA . you got it. No, no, seriously, it could be very useful. Can't see them saying 'Disco Ibiza is dead tonight, best go somewhere else' or anything like that, otherwise they might become a bit unpopular. However, on an island where people can be persuaded to make up their minds, or rather alter their plans, to the last minute, such a speedy instant service is rather useful. WIRED held a glitzy launch party at the ever-hip ES VIVE hotel in Figuretas last Friday, and that's certainly a location where they'll be picking up a lot of their info, I'm sure.
Another celeb story (you heard it here first, not via WIRED - but only because you were looking here to be fair) and another unusual move by MANUMISSION - DIRTY SANCHEZ follow up their appearance last summer with five more - every third Monday - live at BAR M from 18 th of June - with a 20 Euro price tag. Actually the posters say DAINTON, PRITCHARD, PANCHO & DAN JOYCE from DIRTY SANCHEZ , as well as quoting a Maxim review that reckon they " MAKE JACKASS LOOK LIKE THE TELETUBBIES ".
The DIRTY SANCHEZ quartet spent the night before their gig trawling the WEST END of San An, eventually ending up in the SUN & MOON pub with the worker massive (often referred to as the KET CREW ) and were joined at their villa by many a young bar girl. Stories suggest they had a harder time getting through the rest of the day than they did getting through an evening gig where they did such things as stuck drum sticks up their ARSE HOLES and sword fenced with them, before pulling said sticks out and wiping them off on their nostrils. Then there was the LAGER ENEMA , a tug of war trick involving fishing rods, hooks, ear piercing. and so forth.
One night later BAR M host the first IBIZA ROCKS of the season. THE VIEW and THE RUMBLE STRIPS are the rock bands appearing live in concert. "To be filmed for CHANNEL 4 ". Indeed it is, for the second season of the TV series of the same name.
Strange fact: IBIZA ROCKS , held at 300 (or so) capacity BAR M in San Antonio , is holding an After Party in 5,000 (or so) capacity PACHA in Ibiza Town . Which must be something of a first; a beach bar holding a follow-on event at one of the biggest and most glamorous discos on earth! Just what such a 'happening' will consist of is anyone's guess. Further live rock performances are probably quite low on the list, though you never know, perhaps the ARCTIC MONKEY'S and the like will chuck up a casual off-the-cuff acoustic set in the FUNKY ROOM . filmed by CHANNEL 4 , then reported upon by PACHA'S PETE TONG on BBC RADIO ONE .
REVOLVER, the RYAN O'GORMAN (ELECTRIK SEX, VITALIK) event, held at BOULEVARD, the café-terraza on the edge of San An, on the San Jose road, is switching from Saturdays to Mondays from 25 th of June. It remains a 2pm until midnight party. For those missing their bit of CIRCO LOCO at DC10 for the rest of June and all of July, since it rather neatly fills a sudden gap in the timetable - not that REVOLVER would've considered that when making the switch, from 25 th of June onwards, I'm sure.
For those unfamiliar with BOULEVARD it's a large bar and garden terrace, with a open garden terrace area that has an old KM5-ness about it, a deck terrace filled with sofas and private spaces, mattresses, tables, lush greenery. I've referred to it as a mini KM5-MEETS-AMNESIA GARDEN TERRACE and at least one person agreed with that assessment, so maybe I'm right-ish.
I know the venue isn't open quite yet, but when it finally does, GLASSHOUSE, from Leeds , with again host the TERRACE at AMNESIA during CREAM for a FOURTH SUCCESSIVE SEASON .
KARL & KATH , the couple who run GLASSHOUSE (which began life as an After Party in Leeds), like to reside on a boat in the bay when they're over on the island, though last summer Karl ended up not getting off it for the duration after slipping on the jetty and damaging his leg. Anyway, all recovered this time he intends to try to boogie on the Terrace a lot more often (once will be more often, so it shouldn't be difficult). He explained the point of it all: "We just like organising it (the CREAM TERRACE ), giving out copies of our annual compilation CDs to kids, allowing the association with CREAM to raise our brand awareness. People seem to think there's some kind of hidden agenda (for GLASSHOUSE ), but in fact it's as straightforward as that - we host, you enjoy. We certainly enjoy doing it, simple really!"
I met the GLASSHOUSE couple at DAVID'S PIZZERIA in San An, surely now one of the most popular restaurants on the whole island and no longer the 'SECRET' setting that most local club industry people have been used to socialising at each night. One shock this summer was to find that its most famous waitress, BECKY had decided to take a break after six or seven years of holding it together and remembering just about everyone's favourite order from one year to the next. You're missed sweetheart.
LOVE HOUSE 107.7 FM is a new radio station goes on air this week, initially with a signal reaching the IBIZA TOWN to SANTA EULALIA area. Unsurprisingly (given the name) it will offer a diet of House music, including live broadcasts direct from major clubs (if any remain open) and other cool music-related venues. It's a lifestyle media channel, they say, with emphasis upon production quality and regular island music-related news. (Of course, you can read the news here on www.nakiveibiza.com instead, though we're not a radio station)
pon entering what I believed was a major Ibiza discotheque last Friday, I was surprised to discover that I had, in fact, arrived at some kind of POLE-DANCE- CUM -STRIP-CLUB- CUM -SEX-SHOW establishment by mistake, immediately confronted by 15 SCANTILY CLAD SEXY GIRLS, half a dozen of whom quickly STRIPPED OFF before my eyes. Two in particular lay down on the floor in front of me, entirely NAKED , with their SMALL PERT BREASTS and neatly trimmed nether regions on full display (though I didn't look too closely, obviously), then PERFORMED A SEX ACT that was not entirely un-associated with the numbers SIXTY and NINE . I hurriedly made my excuses and left the premises (after they finished, having felt obliged to take a number of photo-snaps), only to be further confused when, outside, I noticed that the name of the venue was ES PARADIS and the entertainment form was known as FREQKLASH ! Are there by any chance TWO Es Para clubs in SAN ANTONIO these days?
was taking a photo of the SUNSET VIEW from a lovely café-bar terrace this evening (Sunday) when two members of staff accosted me and asked if I had permission to do so, from the bar manager. I had a little chuckle until I realised they were being serious. So it seems local businessmen now believe they own all the views FROM their premises too, the vistas upon which they trade so lucratively.
he UK government should make a study of the commercial workings of Ibiza , because this tiny island is forever finding new ways to exploit its visiting population by extracting maximum poundage per person. Charging people to look out at the beautiful views they've paid for holidays to see would certainly be a lucrative new sneaky stealth tax.
